Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin)

What it actually is

The one vitamin that occurs naturally almost exclusively in animal foods. It is produced by bacteria, not by plants, and no reliable plant source exists.

What it does in the body

Needed for the formation of red blood cells, for normal neurological function, and — with folate — for the metabolism of homocysteine.

Where else to get it

Milk, curd, paneer, eggs, fish, meat. Fermented foods and algae are unreliable sources despite frequent claims otherwise.

Worth knowing in IndiaThis is the single most predictable gap in an Indian vegetarian diet. Deficiency develops slowly, over years, because the liver stores a reserve — which is precisely why it goes unnoticed.

In the formula

Absorption declines with age regardless of intake. If you are vegetarian and over fifty, this is worth discussing with a doctor.

KABO does not publish a milligram-by-milligram breakdown of every micronutrient, so this page describes what the ingredient is and what it is needed for rather than how much of it a serving contains. The full ingredient list is printed on every pack and set out at kabo.co.in/pages/ingredients. This is general nutrition information, not medical advice — if you are pregnant, managing a medical condition or taking medication, talk to your doctor before changing what you take.
