Nutrition at 71: Falls, Vitamin D and Why Exercise Wins
Falls are a serious risk after 70, and people often reach for vitamin D tablets first, but the evidence favours strength and balance exercise. Correct a proven vitamin D deficiency, keep protein up, and train balance — in that combination.
- Exercise programmes cut the rate of falls by about a quarter (Cochrane review).
- Vitamin D tablets do not prevent falls in people who are not deficient.
- Deficiency is common in India, so testing is sensible; treat it if it is low.
- ICMR-NIN sets the adult vitamin D RDA at 600 IU (15 µg) a day.
- Protein and calcium support the muscles and bones that a fall tests.

Why falls matter so much now
A fall at 71 is more likely to cause a fracture than at 51, because bones are thinner, and recovery is slower because muscle is lost quickly during bed rest. Preventing the fall is far more valuable than treating its consequences.
What the evidence actually shows
| Intervention | evidence for preventing falls |
|---|---|
| Balance and strength exercise | Strong — reduces the rate of falls by about a quarter |
| Vitamin D, if not deficient | No benefit for falls (USPSTF 2018) |
| Vitamin D, if deficient | Correcting deficiency is good practice for bone and muscle |
| Home hazard checks, eyesight, medicine review | Helpful, especially after a previous fall |
A large Cochrane review in 2019 found that exercise programmes reduced the rate of falls in community-dwelling older people by around 23%. The US Preventive Services Task Force, by contrast, recommends against vitamin D supplements purely to prevent falls in older adults who are not deficient.
Vitamin D: test, then treat
That does not make vitamin D irrelevant. Vitamin D deficiency is widespread in India, including in sunny regions, and genuine deficiency weakens bones and muscles.
ICMR-NIN sets the adult RDA at 600 IU (15 µg) a day; some international bodies set 800 IU for people over 70. Food alone rarely provides this, so if a blood test shows deficiency, your doctor will advise a supplement dose. Very high doses taken without testing are not a good idea.
Exercises that train balance
- Standing on one leg while holding a counter, building up to 10 seconds each side.
- Heel-to-toe walking along a hallway, near a wall for support.
- Sit-to-stand from a chair, slowly, 10 times.
- Tai chi or yoga classes designed for older adults.
Balance improves with practice at any age. Start with support nearby and check with a doctor if you have fallen recently or feel dizzy.
Food that supports the effort
Strong muscles and bones need protein (1.0–1.2 g per kg, see nutrition at 70) and calcium from milk, curd, paneer, ragi and til. Calcium and vitamin D for bones covers food sources. nutrition at 68 explains how muscle strength is measured.
Where KABO fits in
Nothing in a glass prevents falls the way balance and strength exercise does, and vitamin D works only where there is a deficiency to correct.
What a shake can do is support the protein side of the muscle that a fall tests. A KABO serving provides 23–25 g of complete plant protein, 26 vitamins and minerals, 4 g of fibre and 8 billion probiotics in about 198 kcal, from 60+ ingredients; it is vegan and lactose-free. It does not replace a vitamin D test or a prescribed dose. If you follow a kidney-related diet restriction, check with your nephrologist before adding any protein product, and if you take several medicines, show the label to your doctor or pharmacist first — fortified products can contain vitamin K, which matters on warfarin.

Frequently asked questions
Does vitamin D prevent falls in older people?
Not in people who are not deficient. The US Preventive Services Task Force recommends against vitamin D supplements solely to prevent falls in community-dwelling older adults. Correcting a proven deficiency is still worthwhile for bone and muscle health.
What is the best way to prevent falls after 70?
Regular strength and balance exercise has the strongest evidence, reducing the rate of falls by around a quarter in a Cochrane review. Reviewing medicines, checking eyesight and removing home hazards also help.
How much vitamin D does a 71-year-old need?
ICMR-NIN sets the adult RDA at 600 IU (15 micrograms) a day, and some international bodies recommend 800 IU over 70. A blood test shows whether you are deficient, in which case a doctor will advise the right supplement dose.
Should every elderly person take vitamin D tablets?
Not automatically. Testing first is better, because deficiency is common in India but not universal, and very high doses without testing are not advisable.
What exercises improve balance in older adults?
Standing on one leg with support, heel-to-toe walking, slow sit-to-stands and classes such as tai chi or yoga for older adults. Practise near something to hold and progress gradually.
