Nutrition at 27: Why the Weight Came Back
Most weight lost quickly comes back, and 27 is frequently the year it does — after a wedding, after a crash diet, after the deadline passes. Maintenance is a different skill from losing, and the single strongest predictor of keeping weight off is how it was lost in the first place: muscle preserved, habits that survive the end of the diet, and a slow enough rate.
- Regain is the normal outcome of rapid loss, not a personal failure.
- Losing muscle during a diet lowers your energy requirement, which makes regain easier.
- Appetite hormones shift after weight loss and can remain altered for a long period.
- Maintenance needs a plan written before the diet ends, not after the regain starts.
- Weighing weekly and acting on a 2–3 kg drift is what separates maintainers from regainers.

Why regain is the default
After weight loss the body does not simply settle at the new weight. Several things change at once and they all push in the same direction.
| Change after weight loss | effect |
|---|---|
| Lower body mass | Fewer calories needed just to exist |
| Muscle lost during the diet | Further reduction in requirement |
| Increased ghrelin | Greater hunger |
| Reduced leptin | Weaker fullness signalling |
| Reduced non-exercise movement | Unconscious drop in fidgeting and general activity |
| Diet fatigue | Reduced willingness to keep restricting |
None of these is a failure of character. They are physiological responses to losing weight, and they are strongest after rapid loss achieved with large deficits and little protein.
This is the practical argument against the crash approach described in nutrition at 26. It is not only that the loss is partly muscle; it is that the method determines how hard the following year will be.
What maintainers actually do
The research on people who have maintained substantial weight loss for years finds a fairly consistent set of behaviours, and they are unglamorous.
- They weigh themselves regularly — weekly or more, and they act on a small gain rather than waiting.
- They eat protein consistently — it is the most satiating macronutrient and it protects muscle.
- They keep moving daily — step count, not just scheduled exercise.
- They eat broadly the same way on weekends — the weekday-perfect, weekend-abandoned pattern is the classic regain profile.
- They have a recovery rule — a specific plan for what happens after a bad week, rather than treating it as the end.
The weighing point is the most reliably supported and the most resisted. A 2 to 3 kg drift noticed in week three is a minor correction; the same drift noticed at 8 kg in month nine is another diet.
The transition out of a diet
The most dangerous moment is the day the goal is reached, because almost nobody has planned for it. The deadline passes, the structure disappears, and intake returns to pre-diet levels against a now-lower requirement.
A better transition is deliberate and gradual.
| Step | what to do | how long |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Raise calories slowly | Add about 100–150 kcal a week | 3–4 weeks |
| 2. Keep protein unchanged | Hold 1.6 g/kg for now | Ongoing |
| 3. Keep training | Resistance work is what holds muscle | Ongoing |
| 4. Set a trigger weight | 2–3 kg above goal | Permanent |
| 5. Keep weighing | Weekly, same conditions | Permanent |
The trigger weight is the mechanism that does most of the work. Decide in advance the number at which you go back to a mild deficit for a few weeks, and the problem stays a small recurring one rather than becoming a large annual one.
Muscle is the part that determines the next decade
Someone who loses 8 kg with 6 kg of fat and 2 kg of muscle, and then regains 8 kg as 7 kg of fat and 1 kg of muscle, now weighs the same as before with less muscle and more fat. Repeat that a few times across the late twenties and thirties and the body composition deteriorates substantially at an unchanged body weight.
This is the real cost of repeated rapid dieting, and it is invisible on a scale. It is also why protein and resistance training during a deficit matter so much more than the rate of loss.
If your weight has cycled several times already by 27, the most useful next step is probably not another diet. It is a period of maintenance with resistance training and adequate protein, letting body composition improve at a stable weight before attempting any further loss.
Nutrition at 29 deals with the commute that makes all of this harder, and nutrition at 30 covers what is and is not true about metabolism by then.
Where KABO fits in
Maintenance is a behaviour problem rather than a product problem. Weighing weekly, setting a trigger weight and keeping resistance training are what separate the people who keep the weight off from the people who do this again next year.
The nutritional half is holding protein up while calories come down, because that is what decides whether regain costs you muscle. A KABO serving carries 25 g of complete plant protein with 60+ ingredients and 26 vitamins and minerals in about 200 kcal, which is a favourable ratio when you are counting both.

Frequently asked questions
Why do I regain weight after losing it?
Because several physiological changes follow weight loss at once: a lower body mass needs fewer calories, muscle lost during the diet lowers requirements further, ghrelin rises and leptin falls so hunger increases, and unconscious daily movement decreases. Rapid loss with little protein produces the strongest version of all of these.
How do I keep weight off after a diet?
Raise calories gradually over three to four weeks rather than stopping the diet abruptly, keep protein and resistance training unchanged, weigh yourself weekly, and set a trigger weight two to three kilos above goal at which you return to a mild deficit for a few weeks.
Is weight cycling harmful?
Repeated rapid loss and regain tends to worsen body composition, because loss includes muscle while regain is mostly fat. Several cycles can leave you at the same weight with less muscle and more fat, which lowers your energy requirement and makes each subsequent attempt harder.
How often should I weigh myself?
Weekly, under the same conditions, is enough and is strongly associated with successful maintenance. The purpose is to catch a two to three kilo drift early, when it is a minor correction, rather than discovering an eight kilo gain nine months later.
Should I diet again if I have regained weight?
If your weight has already cycled several times, a period of maintenance with resistance training and adequate protein is usually more productive than another deficit. Improving body composition at a stable weight first makes any later loss attempt more likely to hold.
