Nutrition at 57: Cataracts, Eyes and What Food Does
Cataract is the leading cause of blindness in India, and the late fifties is when it typically begins to develop. No food prevents or reverses a cataract — surgery is the only treatment — but UV protection, not smoking and controlling blood sugar genuinely slow its progression, and lutein and zeaxanthin have real but narrower evidence for the retina rather than the lens.
- Cataract is India's leading cause of blindness, and surgery is the only treatment.
- Sunglasses with UV protection are a genuine preventive measure, not a fashion item.
- Diabetes accelerates cataract and causes retinopathy, which is silent until advanced.
- Lutein and zeaxanthin concentrate in the macula; the AREDS2 evidence is about AMD, not cataract.
- An annual dilated eye exam from the mid-fifties catches what symptoms do not.

Separating three different conditions
Most eye advice online blurs conditions with quite different causes and quite different responses to nutrition.
| Condition | what it is | does nutrition help? |
|---|---|---|
| Cataract | Clouding of the lens | Slows progression; cannot reverse |
| Macular degeneration | Damage to the central retina | Yes - AREDS2 formula has evidence |
| Diabetic retinopathy | Blood vessel damage from diabetes | Via blood sugar control |
| Glaucoma | Optic nerve damage, usually with pressure | No meaningful dietary effect |
| Dry eye | Tear film problem | Omega-3 evidence is mixed |
This distinction matters practically. The widely sold "eye health" supplements are generally built on the AREDS2 trial, which tested a specific formulation in people who already had intermediate age-related macular degeneration. It reduced progression to advanced AMD in that group. It is not evidence that the same pills prevent cataract, or that they help someone with healthy eyes.
What actually slows cataract
- UV protection. Cumulative ultraviolet exposure is an established risk factor, and India gets a great deal of sunlight. Sunglasses that genuinely block UV, and a hat with a brim, are the most effective and least glamorous intervention available.
- Not smoking. One of the strongest modifiable risk factors for cataract, as it is for almost everything else on this list.
- Blood sugar control. Diabetes substantially accelerates cataract formation and brings its own retinal disease. With 101 million Indians living with diabetes, this is the single largest eye-health lever in the country.
- Blood pressure control. Relevant to retinal vessel health.
- Not relying on steroid eye drops long term without supervision, which is a real and avoidable cause.
Antioxidant-rich food is associated with slower cataract progression in observational studies, which is a reasonable argument for eating well but not a reason to buy a supplement. Amla, guava, citrus, carrots, dark leafy greens and eggs are the sensible Indian sources, and they are cheap.
Lutein and zeaxanthin, honestly assessed
These two carotenoids concentrate in the macula, the small central part of the retina responsible for detailed vision, where they filter blue light and act as antioxidants. The biological rationale is genuine.
The AREDS2 trial found that a formulation containing lutein and zeaxanthin reduced progression to advanced AMD in people with intermediate AMD. That is a real finding with a specific population attached to it.
| Source | lutein content | note |
|---|---|---|
| Palak (spinach), 100 g cooked | Very high | The best common Indian source |
| Methi and other dark greens | High | Cheap and seasonal |
| Egg yolk | Moderate | Unusually well absorbed |
| Sweet corn | Moderate | |
| Capsicum, especially orange | Moderate | |
| Marigold extract supplements | High | The usual supplement source |
Both are fat-soluble, so they are absorbed considerably better when eaten with some fat. Palak cooked with a little ghee or oil is not merely tastier; it is more useful. This is one of the clearest cases where traditional Indian cooking method and nutritional science agree.
Diabetes and your eyes
If you have diabetes or prediabetes, this section matters more than everything above it.
Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of preventable blindness in working-age adults in many countries. Its defining feature is that it causes no symptoms until it is advanced, by which point treatment is about limiting damage rather than restoring vision.
The requirement is a dilated eye examination at least annually, regardless of how good your vision feels. This is not optional and it is the single most important thing in this article for anyone with diabetes.
Nutrition at 62 covers how diabetes management itself changes with age, and nutrition at 49 deals with the first ninety days after a diagnosis.
What to do at 57
- Book a dilated eye exam — annually if diabetic, every one to two years otherwise.
- Buy sunglasses that actually block UV and wear them outdoors. Cheap ones that darken without UV protection are worse than none, because they dilate the pupil.
- Eat dark leafy greens with fat, several times a week.
- Control blood sugar and blood pressure — the two biggest levers.
- Do not buy an eye supplement for healthy eyes. The AREDS2 evidence applies to people who already have intermediate AMD, and your ophthalmologist should be the one to recommend it.
Nutrition for eye health covers the food side in more depth, and nutrition at 56 deals with brain health, where hearing and vision both turn out to matter.
Where KABO fits in
The eye advice on this page is sunglasses, not smoking, and controlling blood sugar. We do not sell any of those, and a nutrition shake does not prevent a cataract.
Where nutrition does act is through diet quality and blood sugar control, and protein helps by displacing refined carbohydrate from the plate. A KABO serving carries 23–25 g of complete plant protein with 60+ ingredients, 26 vitamins and minerals and no added sugar. For lutein specifically, eat palak cooked with a little fat — that is better advice than any supplement we could sell you.

Frequently asked questions
Can diet prevent cataracts?
No food prevents or reverses a cataract, and surgery is the only treatment. What genuinely slows progression is UV protection with proper sunglasses, not smoking, and controlling blood sugar and blood pressure. Antioxidant-rich food is associated with slower progression but is not a substitute for those.
Do lutein supplements help eyesight?
The AREDS2 trial found a formulation containing lutein and zeaxanthin reduced progression to advanced macular degeneration in people who already had intermediate AMD. That is a specific population. It is not evidence that the same supplements help healthy eyes or prevent cataract.
What foods are good for eyes in India?
Palak and other dark leafy greens are the best common sources of lutein and zeaxanthin, followed by egg yolk, sweet corn and orange capsicum. Both carotenoids are fat-soluble, so cooking greens with a little ghee or oil meaningfully improves absorption.
How often should I get my eyes checked at 57?
Every one to two years with a dilated examination, and at least annually if you have diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy causes no symptoms until it is advanced, so a check based on how your vision feels is not a check at all.
Are sunglasses really necessary in India?
Yes - cumulative UV exposure is an established cataract risk factor and India receives abundant sunlight. One caution: dark lenses without genuine UV protection are worse than no sunglasses, because they dilate the pupil and let more UV reach the lens.
