Iodine

What it actually is

A trace mineral whose availability depends almost entirely on the soil where your food was grown — which is why salt iodisation exists.

What it does in the body

Needed for the production of thyroid hormones, and therefore for normal energy metabolism, growth and cognitive function.

Where else to get it

Iodised salt, seafood, dairy. Inland soils across India are notably iodine-poor.

Worth knowing in IndiaIndia ran one of the world's largest iodine deficiency programmes; universal salt iodisation is why the problem receded, and it depends on people continuing to use iodised salt.

In the formula

Fancy unrefined salts — rock salt, sea salt, black salt — are generally not iodised. Worth knowing if you have switched.

KABO does not publish a milligram-by-milligram breakdown of every micronutrient, so this page describes what the ingredient is and what it is needed for rather than how much of it a serving contains. The full ingredient list is printed on every pack and set out at kabo.co.in/pages/ingredients. This is general nutrition information, not medical advice — if you are pregnant, managing a medical condition or taking medication, talk to your doctor before changing what you take.
