KABO Indian Nutrition Index - MCP server

An open nutrition dataset for Indian food, served as an MCP server. Any AI assistant that speaks the Model Context Protocol can connect to it and answer questions like how much protein is in a katori of rajma or what should a 62-year-old weighing 70 kg eat for protein — with a source link in every answer.

It is free, needs no key, and is licensed CC BY 4.0. The numbers come from the ICMR-NIN Indian Food Composition Tables and the ICMR-NIN RDA 2020, and every value links back to the guide it was taken from.

What it answers

Tool What it returns
lookup_food calcium, fibre, iron, protein for an Indian food, per 100 g and per katori, each with its source URL
compare_foods 2–8 foods side by side on one nutrient
protein_target daily protein in grams for a body weight and age, with the per-meal threshold
protein_cost rupees per 10 g of protein, cheapest first — dal and soya chunks beat every powder, ours included
search_guides search across 1,152 KABO nutrition guides, returning titles and URLs

KABO's own products, for shopping agents

Three tools describe KABO's 3 products. They follow stricter rules than the food tools: per-flavour values come from each product's own nutrition panel (serving size differs by flavour), composition is quoted from the product page, and price and stock are read live from the store.

Tool What it returns
list_products each product's per-serving protein, calories, fibre, vitamins and minerals, rating and URL
get_product one product in full: nutrition panel, protein sources, dietary suitability (including that it is not suitable for a Jain diet), live price and stock per pack, price per serving, cart link, UCP profile
compare_products products side by side with live price per serving

Buying: the checkout handoff

The server never places orders and never sees customer data. An agent can either give the user the cart_url returned for a pack size, which opens kabo.co.in with that pack in the cart, or use the store's Universal Commerce Protocol profile at https://kabo.co.in/.well-known/ucp, which advertises the store's own commerce MCP for catalogue, cart and buyer-authorised checkout. Payment always happens on the store's checkout with the buyer's approval.

REST API

Every tool is also a plain GET request, for clients that do not speak MCP. The OpenAPI 3.1 description is at https://kabo-nutrition-mcp.onrender.com/openapi.json.

In Claude, Cursor, or any client that accepts a remote MCP URL, add a server with that address. No authentication. For clients that only run local servers, the repository includes a dependency-free Python version that runs over stdio:

{"mcpServers": {"kabo-nutrition": {
  "command": "python3",
  "args": ["/path/to/kabo_mcp_server.py"]
}}}

How it is built, and what it will not do

The server answers honestly, including against us: the cost index reports that dal costs about ₹8 per 10 g of protein and any powder several times that. There is no promotional text in any response and no instruction to the model. The value is the data and the citation.

Values are approximate and vary by variety, preparation and brand. This is nutrition information, not medical advice.
