High Triglycerides: What Raises Them, What Lowers Them
Triglycerides respond to different things from LDL, and they move far faster, which is the useful part. Sugar, refined carbohydrate and alcohol drive them, not dietary fat as commonly assumed. The upside is that they also fall fast, often within weeks of changing those three.
- Under 150 mg/dL is the usual target; above 500 is a pancreatitis risk.
- Sugar, refined carbohydrate and alcohol raise them more than fat does.
- They respond quickly — weeks, not months.
- Very high readings can make the calculated LDL on your report unreliable.
- High triglycerides usually travel with insulin resistance and fatty liver.

What they are and what the number means
Triglycerides are the main form in which fat circulates and is stored. After a meal they rise; between meals the body draws on them for energy. A blood test captures a snapshot, which is why what you ate and drank beforehand matters so much more than it does for LDL.
Level and interpretation
| Under 150 mg/dL | Normal |
| 150–199 | Borderline high |
| 200–499 | High |
| 500 and above | Very high — pancreatitis risk, needs medical attention |
The top row is a genuine medical threshold rather than a tidy cut-off. Above roughly 500 mg/dL the risk of acute pancreatitis rises, and that is a reason to see a doctor promptly rather than to start a diet. the lipid profile test explained covers the rest of the report.
What actually raises them
This is where the common assumption misleads. People with high triglycerides are often told to cut fat, and fat is not the main driver.
- Sugar and fructose — sugary drinks, packaged juice, sweets. The liver converts excess fructose to triglycerides directly.
- Refined carbohydrate — maida, white rice in large portions, biscuits, bakery.
- Alcohol — a powerful and fast-acting driver. A heavy session can raise a reading substantially the next day.
- Excess weight, particularly central — tracks closely with insulin resistance.
- Insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes — poorly controlled glucose raises triglycerides.
- Hypothyroidism and kidney disease — both raise them, and both are testable.
- Some medications — steroids, some diuretics, beta blockers, oestrogen.
- Genetics — familial hypertriglyceridaemia exists and behaves differently.
The alcohol point is worth emphasising because it distorts testing. A reading taken after a weekend of drinking can be dramatically higher than the person's usual level, leading to a diagnosis that a repeat test would not support. the signs of insulin resistance covers the metabolic picture these usually sit inside.
Why your LDL figure may be wrong
A practical consequence that goes unmentioned on most reports: LDL is usually calculated rather than measured, using an equation that assumes a typical relationship between triglycerides and VLDL.
When triglycerides are high — particularly above about 400 mg/dL — that assumption breaks down and the calculated LDL becomes unreliable, usually underestimating it. So a reassuring LDL alongside very high triglycerides should not reassure you.
In that situation, non-HDL cholesterol (total minus HDL) is the more trustworthy number, and apolipoprotein B more trustworthy still where available. what your cholesterol numbers mean explains both.
What lowers them, and how fast
| Change | typical speed | size of effect |
|---|---|---|
| Stop alcohol | Days to weeks | Can be dramatic in heavy drinkers |
| Cut sugary drinks and sweets | 2–4 weeks | Large |
| Reduce refined carbohydrate portions | 2–6 weeks | Large |
| Lose 5–10% of body weight | Months | Large, and improves everything else |
| Regular aerobic exercise | Weeks | Moderate |
| Omega-3 (oily fish, or prescribed doses) | Weeks | Moderate to large at therapeutic dose |
| Reducing dietary fat | — | Small, and not the main lever |
The speed is the encouraging part. Unlike LDL, which moves slowly, triglycerides often fall substantially within a month of cutting alcohol and sugary drinks. People who make those two changes and retest at three months frequently see a large difference.
Omega-3 deserves a note: at the doses found in food it helps modestly; the large reductions in trials used prescription-strength preparations, which is a medical decision. a heart-healthy Indian diet covers the dietary pattern that supports all of this.
What high triglycerides usually mean about the rest of you
Isolated high triglycerides with everything else normal happens, but it is not the common case. Usually the reading is one feature of a metabolic picture.
The cluster is familiar: central weight, insulin resistance or prediabetes, low HDL, raised blood pressure, fatty liver. Each worsens the others. whether prediabetes can be reversed, reversing fatty liver and reducing belly fat cover the related pieces, and why South Asians get heart disease earlier explains why South Asians develop this pattern at lower body weights.
This is why a high triglyceride reading is worth more than a dietary tweak. It is a reasonable prompt to check fasting glucose or HbA1c, liver enzymes, blood pressure and waist circumference — see what HbA1c measures and what your blood pressure numbers mean. Finding prediabetes early is more valuable than the lipid number itself.
High triglycerides also associate with raised uric acid, through shared drivers of sugar and alcohol, which high uric acid symptoms covers.
When to see a doctor
Promptly if your triglycerides are above about 500 mg/dL, because of the pancreatitis risk, and urgently for severe abdominal pain radiating to the back, which can be pancreatitis itself.
Also if the level is persistently high despite genuine change, since hypothyroidism, kidney disease, poorly controlled diabetes and some medications are all treatable causes worth excluding.
And do not stop prescribed medication to see what happens. If you want to reduce treatment after a successful lifestyle change, that is a supervised decision with repeat testing.
Where KABO fits in
The drivers named above are sugar, refined carbohydrate and alcohol, and the fix is removing them rather than adding anything. No product substitutes for that.
The one honest connection: triglycerides respond quickly to replacing refined-carbohydrate meals with better-composed ones. A KABO serving is 25 g of complete plant protein with no added sugar, which is a different proposition from the biscuits-and-chai or maida breakfast it might replace. Retest after three months rather than three weeks.

Frequently asked questions
What raises triglycerides the most?
Sugar, refined carbohydrate and alcohol, rather than dietary fat as commonly assumed. Alcohol in particular can raise a reading substantially within a day or two.
How quickly can triglycerides come down?
Faster than LDL. Cutting alcohol and sugary drinks often produces a substantial fall within two to four weeks, with further improvement as weight comes down.
Are high triglycerides dangerous?
Moderately raised levels contribute to cardiovascular risk. Above about 500 mg/dL there is a risk of acute pancreatitis, which needs medical attention rather than a dietary plan.
Why is my LDL normal but triglycerides high?
Because LDL is usually calculated, and that calculation becomes unreliable when triglycerides are high, often underestimating LDL. Non-HDL cholesterol is the more trustworthy number in that situation.
