Healthy Ageing Nutrition in 2027: Protein, Bone and Muscle
After 50, eat more protein per meal: PROT-AGE advises 1.0–1.2 g per kg a day for healthy older adults, about 25–30 g at each main meal. Paired with strength training, that is the best-evidenced way to keep the muscle that keeps you independent.
- Muscle declines with age, faster after 60; protein plus strength training slows it.
- PROT-AGE recommends 1.0–1.2 g/kg a day for healthy older adults and more during illness.
- Thirst weakens with age, so drink to a schedule.
- Unexplained weight loss in an older adult needs a medical review.
- Calcium, vitamin D and B12 need extra attention after 50.

What changes in the body after 50?
Older muscle responds less to protein, a change called anabolic resistance, so it takes more protein per meal to get the same muscle-building effect. Appetite and thirst also tend to fall. Our age-by-age guides cover each year, from nutrition at 50 to nutrition at 65.
| Age | Key focus | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| 50 | Protein per meal starts to matter | Nutrition at 50 |
| 55 | Bone and muscle baseline checks | Nutrition at 55 |
| 60 | Muscle preservation, hydration | Nutrition at 60 |
| 62 | Blood sugar targets loosen, avoid lows | Nutrition at 62 |
| 63 | Unplanned weight loss is the warning sign | Nutrition at 63 |
| 65 | Strength, falls prevention, appetite | Nutrition at 65 |
How much protein do older adults need?
PROT-AGE advises 1.0–1.2 g per kg of body weight a day for healthy older adults and 1.2–1.5 g/kg for those who are ill or recovering, spread as about 25–30 g per main meal. People with kidney disease should follow their nephrologist's target instead. Protein for seniors and the protein by age and weight table translate that into grams.
What about bones?
Bone loss speeds up with age, especially in women after menopause. Calcium, vitamin D, protein and weight-bearing exercise all contribute. Nutrition for bone health covers food sources and tests.
Why does appetite and hydration matter?
Smaller appetites make every bite count: protein-dense foods such as curd, paneer, dal, eggs and nuts help. Because thirst signals weaken, drinking at set times prevents dehydration, as nutrition at 59 explains.
How do you look after an ageing parent's nutrition?
Feeding ageing parents covers soft, protein-rich meals, chewing difficulties and medication interactions. Watch especially for weight loss without trying, which needs a doctor.
What should you do differently in 2027?
- Put 25–30 g of protein in each main meal.
- Do strength exercises twice a week, even at home.
- Check vitamin D, B12 and kidney function yearly.
- Weigh monthly and report unplanned loss.
Where KABO fits in
Strength training and protein at every meal protect muscle; a product cannot do the exercise part, and people with kidney disease must follow their doctor's protein target.
For small appetites, a KABO serving delivers 23–25 g of plant protein with 26 vitamins and minerals in one glass, close to the 25–30 g per meal older adults need. Check eGFR first if kidney function is a concern.

Frequently asked questions
How much protein does a 60-year-old need?
PROT-AGE recommends 1.0–1.2 g per kg of body weight a day for healthy older adults, about 60–72 g for a 60 kg person, ideally 25–30 g per main meal. Kidney disease needs a doctor's target.
How can older adults prevent muscle loss?
Combining enough protein at each meal with strength training twice a week is the best-evidenced way to slow age-related muscle loss.
Do older adults need vitamin supplements?
Vitamin D and B12 deficiencies are common with age. A blood test shows whether a supplement is needed, and a doctor should advise on dose.
Why do older people get dehydrated easily?
The sense of thirst weakens with age, so older adults may not feel thirsty until they are already dehydrated. Drinking at set times helps.
Is losing weight in old age a concern?
Unplanned weight loss in an older adult can signal illness or muscle loss and should be reviewed by a doctor rather than treated as healthy.
What foods are good for seniors with small appetites?
Protein-dense foods such as curd, paneer, dal, eggs, milk and ground nuts give more nutrition per bite, which matters when appetite is small.
