Does Protein Powder Expire? What the Date Really Means
Yes, protein powder expires, but a best-before date marks when quality starts to decline, not the day it becomes unsafe. Sealed and dry, it usually stays safe for a while past that date, though the protein slowly degrades; throw it out if it smells off, has clumped from moisture or shows any mould or insects.
- Indian food labels carry a 'best before' or 'use by' date; they mean different things.
- Past the best-before date, protein powder usually loses quality before it becomes unsafe.
- Over long storage, some lysine becomes unavailable and flavour and mixability decline.
- Moisture is the real risk: clumping, an off smell, mould or insects mean discard it.
- In powders with probiotics, the live count falls over time, so the date matters more.

Does protein powder have an expiry date?
Yes. Indian food law requires packaged food, including protein powder, to carry a date marking. It is usually printed as 'best before' or 'use by', sometimes with a date of manufacture.
Most protein powders carry a shelf life of one to two years from manufacture, depending on the formula and packaging.
What is the difference between best before and use by?
Best before is about quality; use by is about safety. Treat them differently.
| Date marking | What it means | After the date |
|---|---|---|
| Best before | Quality is guaranteed until this date | Usually safe if stored well, but quality falls |
| Use by / expiry | Safety is guaranteed until this date | Do not consume |
When in doubt, follow the pack. How to spot fake protein powder covers what else to check on the label.
What happens to protein powder after it expires?
The protein slowly degrades. During long storage, a reaction between protein and sugars can make some lysine unavailable, and flavour and mixability decline.
None of that makes dry, sealed powder dangerous straight away, but you are getting less of what you paid for. Powders with added probiotics lose live cultures over time, so the stated count may no longer be accurate near or past the date.
How do you know if protein powder has gone bad?
Use your senses. Discard the powder if you notice any of these:
- A sour, bitter or rancid smell.
- Hard clumps that suggest moisture got in.
- A change in colour, or any sign of mould.
- Insects or webbing in the container.
If the powder is dry, smells normal and is only slightly past its best-before date, it is likely safe but may be less effective.
How long does protein powder last after opening?
It depends on storage. Once opened, moisture and air speed up quality loss, so many brands advise finishing an opened pack within a few months; check the label for the exact guidance.
Store it in a cool, dry place with the lid sealed, use a dry scoop, and avoid the fridge, where condensation adds moisture. How to store protein powder has the full routine.
Is it worth buying a large pack to save money?
Only if you will finish it well before the date. A bigger pack is cheaper per serving but loses value if it sits open for months.
Work out how many servings you use a week, then choose a pack you will finish comfortably. What a protein shake is and whether you need one is the place to start if you are unsure how often you will use it.
Where KABO fits in
Whatever you buy, check the date, store it dry and finish an opened pack within the time on the label. That applies to KABO as much as any other powder.
KABO comes in single-serve sachets as well as larger packs, which keeps each serving sealed until you use it — useful if you take it irregularly. Each serving carries 25 g of complete plant protein, 26 vitamins and minerals, 4 g fibre and 8 billion probiotics.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use protein powder after the expiry date?
If the label says 'use by' or 'expiry', no. If it says 'best before' and the powder is dry, sealed and smells normal, it is usually safe for a short time, though quality and protein value decline.
Can expired protein powder make you sick?
It can if moisture has got in and mould or bacteria have grown. Dry, well-stored powder rarely causes illness soon after its best-before date, but discard anything that smells off or has clumped.
How long does protein powder last unopened?
Most protein powders have a shelf life of one to two years from manufacture. The exact date is printed on the pack.
Should protein powder be kept in the fridge?
No. The fridge adds moisture through condensation every time you open the container. A cool, dry cupboard with the lid tightly closed is better.
Does protein powder lose protein over time?
Slowly, yes. Over long storage some protein becomes less usable as lysine reacts with sugars. The effect is small within the shelf life and larger well past it.
