What BCAAs and EAAs are

There are nine essential amino acids — ones your body cannot make and must obtain from food. Three of them (leucine, isoleucine, valine) are branched-chain amino acids, or BCAAs. EAA supplements contain all nine; BCAA supplements contain only those three.

The marketing logic runs: leucine triggers muscle protein synthesis, BCAAs are rich in leucine, therefore BCAA supplements build muscle. The first two statements are true. The conclusion does not follow, and this is where the category falls apart.

Why BCAAs alone do not work well

Muscle is built from all twenty amino acids. Triggering the signal to build muscle without supplying the raw material to build it with is like sounding a construction siren at an empty site.

The research reflects this. Ingesting BCAAs without co-ingesting a source of the other essential amino acids does not stimulate a maximal muscle protein synthesis response[1]. One frequently cited analysis found the muscle protein synthesis response to BCAAs alone was roughly 50% lower than to whey protein containing a similar quantity of BCAAs[2] — the whey worked considerably better because it brought everything else along with it.

The evidence is not entirely one-directional. More recent work indicates BCAA intake can stimulate postprandial muscle protein synthesis rates at rest and after resistance exercise[1]. But "produces some response" is a much weaker claim than "worth buying separately when you already consume protein."

The number that settles it

A review in the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism concluded that BCAA supplementation in addition to adequate protein from other sources yielded no additional hypertrophy benefit[2].

That is the practical answer. If your protein intake is adequate, BCAAs add nothing measurable. And BCAAs are already in your protein — roughly 5–6 g per 25 g serving of whey, and 4–5 g in most plant blends. You are buying separately something you already own.

What about EAAs?

EAAs have a better rationale, since they contain all nine essential amino acids and therefore supply the raw material BCAAs lack. If you were going to buy one of the two, EAAs are the more defensible purchase.

But the same logic applies one level up: a complete protein — whey, or a pea-and-rice blend — already contains all nine essential amino acids, plus the non-essential ones, plus it is cheaper per gram. EAA supplements make sense in narrow clinical or elderly-nutrition contexts where appetite or intake is genuinely limited. For a healthy adult eating food, they are an expensive way to buy what protein already provides.

When they might genuinely be worth it

  • Training fasted and unwilling to break the fast. A small EAA dose has fewer calories than a protein shake. Marginal, but coherent.
  • Clinical situations with restricted intake, under medical guidance.
  • Genuine inability to tolerate protein powders — though a different protein source is usually the better first attempt.

Outside of these, the money is better spent on more protein.
